Shaan Chhadva is a 23-year-old Mumbai-born, L.A.-based producer and singer/songwriter curating his own musical universe to nurture his worldly curiosity. One may have encountered the virtuoso’s deeply resonant pieces without attaching a face to any of his many names; perhaps in the depths of a playlist, or a popular YouTube channel in the background of a study date. But he no longer has an interest in hiding, not even behind the waveform: Chhadva crafts his music with an ineffable sense of connection that pierces the spirit and lends a gentle hand. Hip-hop, psychedelic jazz, indie rock and beyond, this music requires one to open oneself and accept their place in the beyond with gratitude.
Chhadva began his musical journey in Mumbai, learning piano at age five and picking up beatmaking at age 12. At 14, he moved to Michigan to attend high school at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy, studying Composition and Contemporary Piano. His time at Interlochen led to the inception of SCayos: a home for his experimental production work, soon turning into a solo artist project showcasing his singing and overall artistic growth. After a gap year back in Mumbai, Chhadva spent a year at the Berklee School of Music in Boston while his 2021 instrumental album Ethereal Nights - amassed millions of streams. With a budding career on the horizon, and post-pandemic growing pains soon in the rearview, Chhadva left Berklee to begin producing full-time in L.A.
A student of Knxwledge and Madlib as much as Charlie Parker and Chet Baker, Chhadva’s work indulges the sprawl of his impulses and annexes them accordingly; each piece lands where it fits best. No matter the moniker or mode, Shaan Chhadva’s oeuvre chronicles a young artist in a longstanding relationship with his own curiosity, nurturing that sensitivity with an unending wonder and fierce dedication. He’s the product of a childhood spent watching nature in motion; the type of kid who grew up watching ants move around and studying bird calls, hence the Ornithology name. Nostalgia’s a well-tread artistic descriptor, but Chhadva channels said feeling with such a palpable rawness that colors all of his work; there’s an enchanting beauty to what he does with his voice, a guitar, a sample. He’s immersing himself in the harmony of everything in the universe working together.
Whether jazzy, lo-fi, or ambient, the Shaan Chhadva ethos is to make the world feel as big and special as it is. He assumes the role of archivist and documentarian as often as producer; the primary goal is to create as much as possible, as honestly as possible, with detachment from expectation. This attitude led him to over 250 million streams across his entire oeuvre; up until recently, he was minimally forward-facing in promoting himself. But his biggest dash of virality caused him to lean in further: clips of his first-ever performance as Ornithology at L.A.’s Hotel Cafe gained over 10 million impressions across socials and boosted Chhadva’s IG profile to over 100k followers. Where the context of instrumental music enables a certain anonymity while maintaining a potential to reach millions, Chhadva entered a space where his spin on jazz and hip-hop can galvanize (and even reinvigorate) a growing public eager to connect with the forms on a genuine level.
The immediate future finds Shaan Chhadva prioritizing growth and traveling the world to create, visiting Detroit, NYC, Europe, and India. He’s currently riding the high of his latest Ornithology concerts, and the project Chet Baker Reimagined (out on Nettwerk:) a set of authorized remixes of Chet Baker’s long-lost (and rediscovered) 1978 project Love for Sale - Live at The Rising Sun Celebrity Club. The Baker album was recorded in Montreal, but Rising Sun burnt down in 1990, leaving an archive of recordings in ashes. Miraculously, this album was found in a freezer and released to the public; Chhadva later received clearance to remix the jazz great. He recently wrapped sessions with producer Phil Ek in Washington state for a SCayos album, set for early 2026 via Nettwerk. The near-future of the Chhadva sonic universe will continue to make due on his mission to build and share a musical language that deepens our connection with ourselves, each other, and the beauty of the human experience.
